Soccer around the world

Soccer (called football in most countries) is the world's most popular sport. You can play it almost anywhere - kids on a beach in Brazil; guys playing on a lot in Cameroon; girls playing on a school field in California. Over 100 million people play a little - or a lot - of soccer today; and billions of people will watch soccer's World Cup in 2006.

Why is soccer so popular? Here may be a few reasons. All you need is a ball and a little space.

  • It is pretty easy to understand the basics - score more goals than the other team
  • It is an action-filled game - almost no "time outs"
  • It is world-wide
  • There is a lot of excitement in many countries
  • There is an international championship; someone is truly "World Champ"
  • We all want to be part of something exciting; to cheer for a champion. But world champs in soccer come and go; someone like Maradona, who was one of the greatest players in the world for years, can fall from glory with drugs.

The true heroes of this life are those who exemplify love; and courage; and unselfishness. Someone like a nurse in a hospital may never score any soccer goals in life; she will never have 100,000 people cheering her. But she may share the love of Jesus Christ with those who are poor, and sick, and dying. In this life heroes may rise and fall, in soccer and in every other area; but one King stands eternal for all time - Jesus Christ.
