What is God like?

When you think about God, do you think of words like "far away", "not like me", even "scary"? It may seem hard to know God because we can't actually see Him. But He wants to know us. On earth, your soccer coach can be your friend, your helper and teacher. Even though God is not visible to you, He wants you to have a relationship with Him so He can be your friend, your helper, and your teacher for all eternity.

We can know God personally

Though we can’t see God, we can talk with him, ask Him questions and listen to what He has to say. He can help us live our life. How can we do this? By reading the Bible (which are His words to us) and by praying (which is simply talking and listening to Him). God wants to have the same relationship with you that you have with your parents, friends, and spouse.

In the Bible are many stories of people who knew God and had a relationship with Him. David, for example, was called “a man after God’s own heart.” He talked to God, sang and danced for Him, and listened for God’s direction.

David said: “God has spoken plainly and I have heard it many times. God, you are my God. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.” Psalms 62:11, 63:1

God understands what we go through

Jesus said of himself, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” John 14:9.  And, "I and the Father are one." John 10:30.

Jesus felt pain, loneliness, hunger, temptation. Even though Jesus is God, He knows what we have to deal with every day. The Bible says He was tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

Why did He go through all of that? So we could have a relationship with God and live with Him. He cared about us so much, He was willing to die for us. John 3:16

God gives us a reason for living

Why are you here? If you were only born to grow up, make as much money as possible, do a lot of fun things and then die, why bother? God tells us that we were put on this earth to make a difference. By having a relationship with God, you can find true meaning in what you do in your work, with your family and relationships with others. What do you get out of that? The benefits of knowing God, the Bible says, are "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galations 5:22
